About the Studio

Tropic Yard is a Sri Lanka-based architectural design studio with studios in Batticaloa and Colombo. We work at the intersection of tropical climate logic and contemporary minimalism — designing spaces that breathe, shade themselves, and belong to where they stand.

Our work spans residential homes, commercial interiors, and built environments that respond to monsoon patterns, coastal breezes, and the rhythm of Sri Lankan daily life. We believe in honest materials — exposed concrete, steel, timber, terracotta — and in letting structure speak.

Every project is design-led, site-specific, and detail-driven.

Interior architecture is not decoration. It is the logic of how a room holds light, manages heat, and shapes the way people move and rest. We approach interiors with the same rigour as the buildings they live inside.

For larger sites and long-term visions, we think at the scale of the masterplan — working with landowners, developers, and communities to define how a place grows over time, with coherence and intention.

Heritage & Adaptive Reuse

Sri Lanka's built heritage deserves more than preservation — it deserves a second life. We work with existing structures, historic fabric, and forgotten buildings to find new programme without erasing memory.

Not every question has a client. Some questions we ask ourselves. Our research practice explores tropical building typologies, passive design strategies, and the architectural history of the Eastern Province — feeding back into how we design and what we teach.

Based in Batticaloa, we run a growing programme of free and low-cost educational initiatives for school students and local communities across the Eastern Province. We believe that when people understand space, proportion, and structure, they make better decisions about the places they live in.
